About Aramaic
Aramaic is a Semitic language that originated among the Arameans in ancient Syria. For over 3,000 years, it has served as a language of administration, religion, and daily life across the ancient Near East — from the Persian Empire to early Christianity.
Aramaic was the lingua franca of the Near East for centuries, spoken by Jesus of Nazareth and appearing throughout biblical texts including parts of Daniel and Ezra. The Dead Sea Scrolls contain extensive Aramaic passages, and the Talmud — the central text of Rabbinic Judaism — was largely written in it.
Script: Aramaic uses a consonantal alphabet (abjad) written right-to-left, closely related to the Hebrew script. The 22-letter alphabet forms the basis of many modern scripts including Arabic and Hebrew.
Dialects: Biblical Aramaic, Imperial Aramaic, Syriac, Jewish Babylonian Aramaic, and several modern Neo-Aramaic varieties spoken in parts of Iraq, Syria, and the diaspora. Our tool primarily targets Imperial / Biblical Aramaic.
Related languages: Hebrew, Arabic, Syriac, Amharic, and other Semitic languages share common roots with Aramaic.
