About the Old Norse Language
Old Norse (Fornnorrænt) was a North Germanic language spoken by Scandinavians and their overseas settlements from roughly the 9th to 13th centuries. It was the language of the Vikings, the Eddas, and the Icelandic sagas — and the ancestor of modern Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, and Icelandic.
Three main dialects existed: Old West Norse (Norway and Iceland), Old East Norse (Denmark and Sweden), and Old Gutnish (island of Gotland). The best-preserved form survives in the Icelandic literary tradition, including the Poetic Edda and Prose Edda.
Norse words in modern English: Hundreds of everyday English words come from Old Norse, including sky, egg, knife, window, they, their, anger, skull, and Thursday (Þórsdagr — Thor's day).
Writing systems: Old Norse used the Latin alphabet supplemented with special characters — þ (thorn), ð (eth), æ, ø, and ǫ — as well as the earlier runic alphabets: Elder Futhark and the Younger Futhark developed specifically for Norse.
